UMF Math Leadership Course

The University of Maine at Farmington is excited to announce the first in a series of blended (on-campus
meetings , teleconferencing and online) coursework to prepare educators for the challenges of being a
mathematics leader, whether it be a math coach, a math interventionist, an RTI Coordinator, a Title I: Math
Teacher or a grade-level team leader. The first graduate course in the four-course blended format series is:

EDU 529 Mathematics Leadership in K-12 settings
Understanding and Implementing the Common Core State Standards

The content of this course is specific to the skills and concepts needed as an emergent mathematics leader/specialist. This course will address:
• Common Core State Mathematics Standards and their evolution.
• Vertical curriculum flow of the standards.
• The relationship between Response to Intervention [RTI] and the standards.
• Creation of differentiated curriculum and curriculum documents from the standards.

Participants will:
• Complete a research project that will examine the history and evolution of the standards-based mathematics movement.
• Develop a grade-span differentiation, curriculum document and a standards-based mathematics unit.
• Complete a culminating portfolio to show evidence of the participant’s ability to use the learning in a
professional development capacity as a mathematics leader.

Coursework will be structured to match
the needs of enrollees.

This coursework will give the enrollee the foundation for this course and three more courses in math leadership:
• Mathematics Content Knowledge: the mathematics behind the standards.
• Mathematics Pedagogical Knowledge: effective instructional practices for teaching the standards.
• Mathematics Leadership: supervision and the culture of leadership for guiding the professional development of other educators.

This course will use a blended (hybrid) design to include:
• Three (3) face-to-face on-campus classes on Saturdays, September 15, October 27, and December
15 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, and
• teleconferencing and online work.
