2014 Recipient: Donna Hardt

ATOMIM salutes Donna Hardt as the 2014 Jacqueline Mitchell Mathematics Educator Award recipient for her outstanding contributions to mathematics in the State of Maine. Donna serves on the ATOMIM Board as the District 5 Representative.

Donna is currently functioning as the RSU 13 K-5 Math Coach for teachers. She also works with the ELA teacher. Neal Guyer, the district person overseeing the two, wrote,"Together they make quite a team." He also added that one of the things he particularly appreciated seeing developed is their 'case study' approach to training. An example would be that Donna holds regular meetings with all of the Title 1A teachers that provide RTI, tier 2 intervention services.

Additionally, Donna is a mentor to new teachers or teachers assigned to different grade levels, again - providing on-going professional development as needed. RSU 13 is also emphasizing RTI, Tier I interventions in mathematics, and Donna has provided invaluable help for teachers who find this to be a new and challenging professional responsibility.

Recently, Donna completed a graduate cohort sequence for math leadership. She is the chair of the K-12 math team. This is a group of teachers tasked with maintaining the district's programs and curriculum, overseeing transition to the Common Core, selecting appropriate supportive technology, setting goals for program improvement, studying and selecting new programs, problem solving glitches, etc., keeping the group focused and moving forward.

We honor Donna Hardt for her work in mathematics and mathematics education by presenting her with the 2014 Jacqueline Mitchell Mathematics Educator Award.
