2023 Recipient: Carrie Lamothe

ATOMIM salutes Carrie Lamothe for her outstanding contribution in mathematics in the State of Maine.

Carrie is a leader in math education at C.K Burns School in Saco Maine. She has been an educator for over 35 years. She has seen changes in mathematics since first starting as a classroom teacher. She is always up for the challenge when it comes to improving teacher learning and student achievement. Carrie’s excitement for mathematics makes her an exceptional teacher.

Carrie is sought out by all of the teachers at her school, as well as by other teachers in the district. Her content knowledge of mathematics is second to none. She is continually deepening her own understanding of mathematics by taking classes. She was in the first cohort of teachers who participated in the Math Leadership series at UMF, and then continued on with the first cohort of Math Coaching. Carrie is not afraid of taking the leap and trying new things. She wants to bring those changes to her school. She has been a mentor coach for so many teachers as well as new coaches. She always makes time for teachers and they benefit from her experiences.

Carrie has been an assistant principal, curriculum coach for students K-8, team leader, and math coach. She leads PLC meetings and is the Math Curriculum Design Team chairperson. Carrie designs professional development opportunities, and book clubs, and has taken on the challenge of implementing a whole school math agreement. Carrie has stepped up in these leadership roles at a moment’s notice. She was asked to take on the assistant principalship on two different occasions. She did not hesitate to step right in because she knew it was the right thing to do for the teachers and students at C. K. Burns School. No matter what leadership role Carrie takes on, the time and effort that she puts forth are above and beyond anyone’s expectations. She is not afraid to work hard and always gives 110%.

We honor Carrie Lamothe for all her work in mathematics and mathematics education by presenting her with the 2023 Jacqueline Mitchell Mathematics Educator Award.
