The Jacqueline Mitchell Mathematics Educator Award

2018 Recipient: Margaret Griswold

ATOMIM salutes Margaret Griswold for her outstanding contributions in mathematics education and mathematics leadership in the state of Maine by honoring her with the Jacqueline Mitchell Award.

Margaret received her Masters in Public Administration with a concentration  in Educational Law from Rutgers, New Jersey. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with a concentration in Mathematics Education from Bowling Green University, Ohio. She is currently one of the two educators for the Mathematics Leadership series offered through the Education Outreach program at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Educators throughout the state of Maine who have participated in any of the programs in which Maggie has been involved, say that she is one of their strongest advocates. Maggie is an avid lover of the subject of mathematics. "She not only makes connections with her students during her classes, she continues to grow that relationship long after the class has finished," stated several of her former student.

One educator who was enrolled in the Mathematics Leadership series shared that she feels a seed was planted for her to recognize her own ability to see herself as a potential education leader and to focus on the area of mathematics.

Although Maggie no longer lives in Maine, her presence continues to be strongly felt throughout Maine by many educators. Technology allows Maggie to continue to support Maine's teachers in their pursuit for the improvement of mathematics learning, and to continue her collaboration with the Maine Department of Education Mathematics Specialist. Many teachers are growing as leaders in mathematics because of her role in mathematics education in Maine.
